Community Justice Group.
The Community Justice Group (CJG) has been operating in Toowoomba since 2003. The primary objectives of the CJG are to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities’ knowledge and skills in relation to the criminal justice system and assist local courts when dealing with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Two local respected Elders, Aunty Beryl Pegler and Uncle Darby McCarthy sit with the Magistrate in Murri Court providing cultural support and guidance not only to the Magistrate but also to the defendant. The Elders of the CJG visit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inmates in correctional centres providing support and mentorship also.
